SUMMARY:Laughter on the 23rd Floor @ St. Michael's Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:Laughter on the 23rd Floor: By Neil Simon \nEvenings: 8:00 p.m.  July 31 – August 3\, 6 – 10\, 2019\nMatinees: 2:00 p.m.  August 3 & 10\, 2019 \nSt. Michael’s Playhouse | Colchester\, VT \n-Get Tickets and Event Info Here- \nNeil Simon’s tribute to his early career as a TV writer alongside comedy legends Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks\, Laughter on the 23rd Floor follows the roller-coaster antics in a not-your-average 1950s writers’ room as they frantically attempt to please their larger-than-life boss of a weekly comedy variety show. \nSet backstage at “The Max Prince Show\,” a fictional TV comedy series in Manhattan in the early ’50s\, Laughter on the 23rd Floor is somewhat of a continuation of his trilogy Brighton Beach Memoirs\, Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound\, which ended with the young narrator beginning his career as a comedy writer at a TV show in New York City. \nNote: Laughter on the 23rd Floor contains some mature language. \nThe lights dimmed on Broadway this year in honor of the passing of legendary playwright Neil Simon. This production is dedicated to Mr. Simon whose name was synonymous with comedy. On Broadway\, he was known for his iconic works such as Brighton Beach Memoirs\, Biloxi Blues\, Broadway Bound\, Barefoot in the Park\, The Odd Couple\, Rumors\, and Laughter on the 23rd Floor. In addition to receiving four Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama\, he was honored with several Writers Guild of America Awards\, an American Comedy Awards Lifetime Achievement honor\, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s Monte Cristo Award.

SUMMARY:Battery Park Free Concert Series: Devon Gilfillian
DESCRIPTION:There is deep soul in the music of Devon Gilfillian—but for the talented Nashville-based singer-songwriter and bandleader\, that descriptor goes way beyond a mere genre classification.\nGrowing up in Philadelphia on a steady diet of R&B\, hip-hop\, rock\, blues\, and soul music\, Gilfillian gravitated to records that ignited his mind while making his body move. For him\, listening to the towering icons of his musician father’s era—Ray Charles\, Stevie Wonder\, Otis Redding\, The Temptations—was just as formative and exciting as discovering the new sounds of his own generation\, and the beats and rhymes made by rising rap stars like Wu-Tang Clan\, Kanye West\, Notorious B.I.G.\, and Jay-Z inspired him in new ways. He began to recognize a connective thread in the sounds he loved best: from the golden throwbacks sampled by the hip-hop beat makers to the raw\, emotional vocal deliveries of the Motown greats\, for Gilfillian the key ingredient seemed to be the “soul”—not simply the genre\, but the feeling and vibe.

SUMMARY:Mystic Bowie's Talking Dreads @ Colburn Park ((Free Show!))
DESCRIPTION:2019 Front Porch Concert Series: \nFREE SHOW \nFeaturing: \nMystic Bowie’s Talking Dreads\n \nThursday\, August 1st @ 7:00 pm \nColburn Park | Lebanon\, NH   ( across from 51 North Park Street) \n“Talking Dreads is much more than a cover band\,” Mystic says. “I am very much drawing on my own musical culture and history to make these amazing songs my own\, while at the same time preserving the integrity of the Talking Heads songs. I’ve always felt that reggae’s dance-inspiring\, feel good vibe is universal\, as are many of the band’s songs. And don’t forget their intelligent\, powerful lyrics\, which are fun to sing and shine fresh light on through this new fusion of styles. It took a lot of effort to deconstruct and dissect each song to make it work seamlessly with my singing and performance style. I removed all the instrumentation\, kept the story and words\, then created my own reggae\, Caribbean and tribal feel and married those two elements – then brought back a few of the melodies that captured my attention back in the day.” \nMystic can trace his passion for all things Talking Heads back to his early days performing at hotels in Jamaica\, when he heard “Wild Wild Life” – but his connection to the legendary new wave band goes much deeper. His close personal and professional relationship with Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth\, founding members of Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club\, began when he joined the latter group as a singer in 1996. He appeared on their 2000 album The Good\, The Bad and the Funky and performed with them for nearly 20 years. Mystic’s first spark of inspiration for the concept that evolved into Talking Dreads began during his time with Tom Tom Club\, when there were attempts by certain entities to secure a new Talking Heads album and reunion tour.

SUMMARY:Beach House @ Flynn Center
DESCRIPTION:Beach House \nThursday\, August 1st @ 8:00 pm \nFlynn Center | Burlington\, VT \nOn sale Friday\, May 3rd at 10 AM \n-Get Tickets and Event Info Here- \n7 is our 7th full-length record. At its release\, we will have been a band for over 13 years. We have now written and released a total of 77 songs together. \nLast year\, we released an album of b-sides and rarities. It felt like a good step for us. It helped us clean the creative closet\, put the past to bed\, and start anew. \nThroughout the process of recording 7\, our goal was rebirth and rejuvenation. We wanted to rethink old methods and shed some self-imposed limitations. In the past\, we often limited our writing to parts that we could perform live. On 7\, we decided to follow whatever came naturally. As a result\, there are some songs with no guitar\, and some without keyboard. There are songs with layers and production that we could never recreate live\, and that is exciting to us. Basically\, we let our creative moods\, instead of instrumentation\, dictate the album’s feel. \nIn the past\, the economics of recording have dictated that we write for a year\, go to the studio\, and record the entire record as quickly as possible. We have always hated this because by the time the recording happens\, a certain excitement about older songs has often been lost. This time\, we built a “home” studio\, and began all of the songs there. Whenever we had a group of 3-4 songs that we were excited about\, we would go to a “proper” recording studio and finish recording them there. This way\, the amount of time between the original idea and the finished song was pretty short (of the album’s 11 songs\, 8 were finished at Carriage House in Stamford\, CT and 2 at Palmetto Studio in Los Angeles). \n7 didn’t have a producer in the traditional sense. We much preferred this\, as it felt like the ideas drove the creativity\, not any one person’s process. James Barone\, who became our live drummer in 2016\, played on the entire record. His tastes and the trust we have in him really helped us keep rhythm at the center of a lot of these songs. We also worked with Sonic Boom (Peter Kember). Peter became a great force on this record\, in the shedding of conventions and in helping to keep the songs alive\, fresh and protected from the destructive forces of recording studio over-production/over-perfection. \nThe societal insanity of 2016-17 was also deeply influential\, as it must be for most artists these days. Looking back\, there is quite a bit of chaos happening in these songs\, and a pervasive dark field that we had little control over. The discussions surrounding women’s issues were a constant source of inspiration and questioning. The energy\, lyrics and moods of much of this record grew from ruminations on the roles\, pressures and conditions that our society places on women\, past and present. The twisted double edge of glamour\, with its perils and perfect moments\, was an endless source (see “L’Inconnue\,” “Drunk in LA\,” “Woo\,” “Girl of the Year\,” “Last Ride”). \nIn a more general sense\, we are interested by the human mind’s (and nature’s) tendency to create forces equal and opposite to those present. Thematically\, this record often deals with the beauty that arises in dealing with darkness; the empathy and love that grows from collective trauma; the place one reaches when they accept rather than deny (see “Dark Spring\,” “Pay No Mind\,” “Lemon Glow\,” “Dive\,” “Black Car\,” “Lose Your Smile”). \nThe title\, 7\, itself is simply a number that represents our seventh record. We hoped its simplicity would encourage people to look inside. No title using words that we could find felt like an appropriate summation of the album. \nThe number 7 does represent some interesting connections in numerology. 1 and 7 have always shared a common look\, so 7 feels like the perfect step in the sequence to act as a restart or “semi-first.” Most early religions also had a fascination with 7 as being the highest level of spirituality\, as in “Seventh Heaven.” At our best creative moments\, we felt we were channeling some kind of heavy truth\, and we sincerely hope the listeners will feel that. \nMuch Love\, \nBeach House
